How to Choose a Winning Product (Before You Spend a Dollar on It)

A good product sits at the intersection of real demand, a defensible niche, and workable unit economics. Here's how to test for all three before committing.

How to Choose a Winning Product (Before You Spend a Dollar on It)

The most common founder mistake I see isn’t bad execution - it’s choosing the wrong product to execute on in the first place. A great product idea that nobody’s searching for, or that can’t be shipped profitably, will sink even the best marketing plan.

Start with demand, not preference

Loving a product isn’t a business plan. Before committing, check whether real demand already exists: search volume for the category, active communities or creators talking about the problem it solves, and competitors who’ve been selling in the space for a while. Established competitors are usually a good sign - it means there’s real money in the category, not proof the market is “too crowded.”

Get specific

“Skincare” is not a niche. “Skincare for sensitive skin after retinol use” is. A narrow, specific niche lets you speak directly to one customer, become the obvious choice for them, and expand into adjacent categories once you’ve proven the model - rather than starting broad and generic and never being anyone’s first choice.

Check the unit economics honestly

A product needs a margin that survives production, packaging, shipping, and the real cost of acquiring a customer - not just the cost of making it. A great product with bad economics will grow you straight into a cash flow problem. Before setting a price, add up every cost end to end and build in margin for marketing, not just for the item itself.

Practical, not perfect

Is it easy to ship? Is it fragile? Does it photograph well? These operational questions matter as much as the creative ones - a beautiful product that’s expensive to ship or breaks in transit will eat your margins from a different direction.

The real test

A winning product isn’t the one you’re most excited about. It’s the one where demand, differentiation, and economics all point the same direction at once.
