Where AI Actually Helps a Growing eCommerce Brand (and Where It Doesn't)

AI is genuinely useful for DTC brands in a few specific places - and a distraction almost everywhere else. Here's how I actually use it with clients.

Where AI Actually Helps a Growing eCommerce Brand (and Where It Doesn't)

Every brand is being told to “use AI” right now, without much specificity about where it actually helps. Used well, it’s a real efficiency gain. Used as a gimmick, it’s a distraction from the fundamentals that actually drive revenue.

Where it genuinely helps

Content production at scale. Drafting product descriptions, email variants, and ad copy variations is faster with AI as a first pass - as long as a human still edits for brand voice and accuracy before anything ships.

Customer service triage. AI-powered first response can handle common questions - order status, sizing, return policy - instantly, freeing your team to spend their time on the complex or sensitive cases that actually need a person.

Data and pattern-spotting. Sorting through reviews, support tickets, or campaign data to spot patterns humans would take hours to find manually is one of the strongest, least glamorous use cases.

Creative production support. AI-assisted image editing and background generation can speed up product photography workflows, particularly for smaller teams without an in-house studio.

Where it doesn’t help (yet)

Brand voice and positioning. AI can draft in a voice, but it can’t decide what that voice should be, or what makes your brand different from the next one. That’s strategic work, not a prompt.

Customer trust moments. A generic AI chatbot handling a frustrated customer’s complaint, with no clear escalation to a real person, usually damages trust faster than it builds it.

Replacing judgment on spend and strategy. AI can summarize data. It shouldn’t be making your budget allocation or positioning decisions without a human who understands the full context of the business.

The actual mandate

Use AI to remove repetitive work from your team’s plate so they have more time for the judgment calls - strategy, creative direction, and relationships - that actually require a human. Treat it as leverage, not a replacement for thinking.
