5 Shopify Mistakes That Are Quietly Costing You Sales

Most underperforming Shopify stores aren't broken - they're just carrying small, fixable mistakes that add up to a lot of lost revenue.

5 Shopify Mistakes That Are Quietly Costing You Sales

I’ve rebuilt and audited enough Shopify stores to see the same handful of mistakes show up again and again - across categories, across budgets. None of them are dramatic on their own. Together, they quietly cap growth.

1. Too many apps, too early

Every app is a decision point and a potential slowdown. Stores that install ten apps in the first month usually end up with a slower site and a monthly bill that outpaces what any single app is actually contributing. Start with the essentials - reviews, email/SMS - and add only when there’s a clear need.

2. A generic theme with no real customization

Default themes with default copy and default layout tell customers nothing about who the brand is. The theme itself doesn’t need to be expensive, but it needs to look intentional, not out of the box.

3. Checkout friction nobody’s tested

Shipping costs revealed only at the final step, too many required fields, no guest checkout - these are some of the most common reasons for cart abandonment, and most stores have never actually walked their own checkout as a customer.

4. Product pages optimized for the merchant, not the customer

Long technical specs with no clear benefit statement. No real photography. No social proof. A product page’s job is to answer the customer’s real question - will this work for me - not to describe the product to itself.

5. No plan for what happens after the sale

Stores that stop thinking about the customer the moment the order confirmation email sends are leaving retention revenue on the table. A simple post-purchase flow and a reason to come back again matter more than most merchants realize.

Where to start

Pick one. Audit it honestly, ideally by asking someone outside the business to actually try to buy something. The fixes are rarely expensive - they’re just easy to overlook from the inside.
